Whitireia

Whitireia Performing Arts (NZ)

Watching Maori dancing just never seems to get old. The experience is always exhilarating, as if you are peering deep into the spirit of a culture and its deep-rooted traditions.  The Whitireia Performing Arts troupe was no exception.

Made up of current and past students of the Wellington community arts program of the same name, this group of cultural dancers impressed with their skill and enthusiasm. Men and women featured in equal parts, both donning dramatic black makeup and traditional dress that in combination, conjured both awe and fear in the observer. Unfortunately for some members of the company, fate landed a blow in the form of delayed luggage, which meant they weren't able to appear in full costume.  They performed brilliantly just the same, admirably not allowing this to impact on their performance.

A wonderful display of chanting, dance and music in the traditions of the Maori and Pacific Islands people.
