This Barefoot Interview 'Director In Focus' looks at Flying Penguin Productions founder, and Award Winning Director David Mealor, how he got into theatre, why he loves it and whats in the future. Paul and Nicole interviewed David in the Dunstan Playhouse at the Adelaide Festival Theatre, the home of the State Theatre Company in October 2010.

 

 

 Paul asks David about his start in theatre and the what inspired him to get started, David talks about his actors training, mentors throughout his acting career and the influences that brought him to the where he is today. David also talks about the need for mentoring and support in the industry to help each other and to give back to the South Australian Arts Insdustry.

 

Nicole asks David if he has any advice for budding young actors and directors, and David talks about the kind of attitude that artists need to maintain to be successful in the Arts Industry. David also taks about the myths and falacies of making it big in Hollywood and the success of Australian actors abroad. Paul asks David why he is in the Arts, and what makes him keep coming back despite how hard it can often be.

 

Nicole asks about running your own production company, the successes, the pitfalls and the commitment required to make it work. David talks about the problems surrounding overworking, and his feelings about spending serious time on a piece and not rushing. Paul asks about the change from Actor to Director, and delves into when that change took place.

 

Paul asks about winning awards, and recogintion and David talks about his recent request to direct for the 2011 season with State Theatre Company. Nicole asks about the future of Flying Penguin, and the direction which David would like to take. David talks about his desire to work on creating a piece from scratch and collaborating on the writing of a script from blank page to stage.
