Old Adelaide Gaol makes Fringe Venue

Chants Des Catacombes is a little story about three murdered women: a showgirl, a surgeon and a courtesan. The innocence of each woman has been stripped. For these three dead women history has turned the page, yet they continue to walk restlessly up and down the dark corridors of the Catacombs, remembering and forgetting.

The Old Adelaide Gaol provides the backdrop for this unique Adelaide Fringe event.

Chants Des Catacombes is a macabre musical theatre experience weaving popular and classical songs with dark stories of sex, love and femininity. “Music styles are fused together, genres are  embraced, used and abused. The audience is immersed in the imposing Old Adelaide Gaol, and we create a musical experience to surprise and shock,” says Musical Director Nathan Gilkes.

“After a successful Melbourne season we welcome art-pop duo THE TWOKS (electrical violinist sensation Xani Kolac and drummer Mark Leahy) into our team of artists,” says Gilkes.

“The music of THE TWOKS has been described as epic, hard-edged, tribal, sunny, seductive and hypnotic. Xani Kolac and Mark Leahy make music that is truly impossible to put in a box. We are thrilled to place their outstanding artistry into a Fringe Theatre experience that in itself can’t be boxed in.”

THE TWOKS join pianist and violinist Nathan Gilkes, harpist Anna Boulic and actresses Zoe McDonald and Laura Burzacott. The performance takes the audience on a narrative journey across rooms and locations within the Gaol.

“We love unleashing our hi-octane, energetic sound in performance. It’s going to be incredible to do this in the context of a live theatrical experience. The music in Chants is exciting - it’s an eclectic mix of experiences; Jazz, Celtic, Improvisation, Classical, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Opera and Indie,” says Xani Kolac.
